Boris Godunov ishte anëtari më i shquar i një familjeje të lashtë, tani të zhdukur, ruse me origjinë tatare (Chet), e cila erdhi nga Hordhia në Kostroma në fillim të shekullit të 14-të. Ai u zbrit nga Princi Tatar Chet, i cili shkoi nga Hordhia e Artë në Rusi dhe themeloi Manastirin Ipatiev në Kostroma. Borisi ishte djali i Feodor Ivanovich Godunov “Krivoy” (“me një sy”) (vdiq rreth viteve 1568-1570) dhe gruas së tij Stepanida Ivanovna. Vëllai i tij më i madh Vasily vdiq i ri dhe pa asnjë problem. 1552
